Our first foray north of the border to Scotland for some wedding photography.
Dawn + Ollie tied the knot (literally) in front of the ancient Torwoodlee Tower near Galashiels in the Scottish Borders. The tower must have witnessed some incredible events throughout the centuries but were any as lovely as the wedding between these two fantastic folks? As if on cue, the torrential rain was replaced by glorious sunshine as guests arrived and the bridal party made their way up to the woodland clearing. The ceremony included a hand fastening and sharing single malt Scotch whisky from a quaich.
The reception was a short drive away on the family’s land. A large marquee had been erected for dinner and dancing and several bell tents were in nearby meadows ready for camping.
Instead of tossing the rather nice bouquet, Dawn opted to throw a specially decorated rugby ball. A little team spirit ensuring one lady’s triumph. We loved this little twist on tradition. There was also some inspired decorations with neon signage and antlers surrounding the table plan. Each table was named after a fine whisky and when you found the right bottle you could enjoy a wee dram (or more) using the engraved whisky glass wedding favours.
Some touching speeches and a superb meal led into the dancing. We’d been told “you haven’t seen a ceilidh until you see a Scottish Ceilidh” and now we understand why. It was invigorating and beautiful chaos. The last dance of the night starting with pure romance and ending in war cries, charges and hugs.
If Ollie and Dawn’s wedding is a fair example of what we can expect from Scotland wedding photography, then we can’t wait to do it again. It’s not the incredible locations or the details that make a wedding, it’s the people. Every single person we spoke to was so welcoming, cheerful and determined that the couple and their fellow guests have the best time. The spirit of this wedding will stay with us for a long time to come.
Here are a few of our favourite shots from the day…
We also had the privilege to shoot the day after. We learnt that the best hangover cure was to get the shot ski out again, open some more champagne, fire up the bbq and down a “tin eh ginger”.
We were so lucky to be here as Granny made a surprise visit. She wasn’t able to make it to the main event but there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as she made her entrance.
