We love the dark. We shot one of our very first weddings in the dead of winter and had to think of some creative portrait ideas that we could use in complete darkness at night. The shot at the top of the page is our favourite from that wedding and we still love how it came out!
Since that wedding back at the end of 2014 we’ve taken to using the darkness more and more. It’s a real treat for us if we get a dark night and a willing couple who let us steal them away from the party for five minutes for one more shot.
A lot of people worry that if they’re getting married in winter they won’t have the opportunity for many photographs. Totally not true, depending on your ceremony time you can always do a first look before the ceremony and then embrace the time of year and have some photographs in the dark.
The main thing to remember if you’re getting married outside of summer is to see what time the sunset will roughly be and aim to be married and allow for photo time well before then, especially if you do want some daylight photos. The deeper you get into winter the shorter the days and less chance of it getting properly light!
But look how awesome the darkness is…
