Everytime I see the Hispaniola sailing in the bay I like to think I’m in the end credits of the Goonies. The kids are on the beach with Sloth and the bad guys and One Eyed Willie’s treasure is sailing off into the great unknown.
In reality it’s full of paying tourists who are in the process of having a windy trip on the North Sea and we are usually heading for chips and ice cream.
We try to get one weekend off in summer, usually around my (Emma’s) birthday so she gets to fill her eyes with the seaside. We’ve discovered that we owe a decent chunk of debt to the garish and tacky seaside we grew up in as it has influenced how we see the world. We need to investigate this more when it’s not the middle of wedding season.
We had to park in town as it was a LOT busier than we thought it was going to be. We were expecting everyone to be in the pub getting ready to watch England play Sweden, but it seems some people had the same idea as us. A trip down in the cliff lift and face to face with the sad demolition of the Futurist. A lot of memories came flooding back, my first trip to the cinema with a boy, seeing Rik and Ade in Bottom Live and dancing on stage with Belle and Sebastian. Sad times.
Anyway, we went to the Fish Pan for lunch (4 little sausages, chips and gravy for me / chip butty for him) and followed that with a boatload of ice cream. We love going to the Harbour Bar, it’s like stepping back in time. I always say I’m going to try something new, then when asked what I want, I blurt out Knickerbocker Glory. I did have a fresh fruit ice cream milkshake made with peaches, which was wonderful.
Then a walk back to the car with a bit of people watching on the way. No time for a trip on the Hispaniola this time, it was straight home to watch the football.
